Ping Pong Ball Holiday Lights

2013-11-11

I don’t know why but I am drawn to the look of ping pong balls….what is that all about? Maybe they bring back childhood memories when Mr. Moose repeatedly dropped ping pong balls on Captain Kangaroo but I doubt it. I think the smooth white surface feels like a unique modern palette that is begging to become something.

I decided to make holiday lights with…you guessed it….ping pong balls. Here are step by step instructions if you want to make them yourself.

Shopping List:

  • Battery Powered Christmas Lights- IKEA had this small set for around $3, they have a white cord which is perfect for this project
  • Ping pong balls
  • Nail polish remover
  • Drill and bits
  • Non-flammable adhesive silicone
  • Paper Towel
  • Protective gloves

Step-By-Step Instructions

1.) Prepare the Ping Pong Balls by removing the stamp on them. Do yourself and your family a favor and go outside for this. Wearing your gloves, pour a little nail polish remover into a paper towel and with it resting in your palm, twist that ping pong ball back and forth in your hand like your rubbing a bullies face in a pile of snow. The stamp will rub right off into the paper towel

2.) Take a small drill bit and drill a hole in one side of the ball to give yourself a starting point. Use a large bit just slightly bigger than the light on the strand and drill a bigger hole in the exact same place. If you try to start with a big hole, the hole is not as clean.

3.) Place the ball around the light and use a small glob of silicone adhesive to hold it in place.

4.) Let dry and hang them somewhere pretty!

  2. I was at the dollar store last night and was very disappointed that they only had orange ping pong balls. Boo. I’m not giving up yet though. I will have ping pong lights! Haha… Anyway – I wanted to let you know that a handmade holiday link party just started up over on my blog. I would absolutely love it if you linked this and your other holiday projects up. Thanks! :) persialou.blogspot.com/2013/11/handmade-holiday-link-party.html

    • I feel your pain Alexis! I have had more ‘Orange Ping Pong Ball’ moments than I can count. I almost had a meltdown Monday at target because I needed a BOX of matches, the saleslady couldn’t understand why a box of matchbooks wouldn’t work. Target DID have white ping Pong Balls though, I think it was $13 for 38. I got a box of 36 on sale at Sears for $9.99 so keep looking. Another tip, you may want to look for the lights first, the regular ones are a bit long to fit in the ping pong ball. I got these small ones at IKEA and they were battery powered which was a huge bonus!

Thanks for tipping me off to your linky party! I am heading over now!
