I don’t know why but I am drawn to the look of ping pong balls….what is that all about? Maybe they bring back childhood memories when Mr. Moose repeatedly dropped ping pong balls on Captain Kangaroo but I doubt it. I think the smooth white surface feels like a unique modern palette that is begging to become something.
I decided to make holiday lights with…you guessed it….ping pong balls. Here are step by step instructions if you want to make them yourself.
- Battery Powered Christmas Lights- IKEA had this small set for around $3, they have a white cord which is perfect for this project
- Ping pong balls
- Nail polish remover
- Drill and bits
- Non-flammable adhesive silicone
- Paper Towel
- Protective gloves
1.) Prepare the Ping Pong Balls by removing the stamp on them. Do yourself and your family a favor and go outside for this. Wearing your gloves, pour a little nail polish remover into a paper towel and with it resting in your palm, twist that ping pong ball back and forth in your hand like your rubbing a bullies face in a pile of snow. The stamp will rub right off into the paper towel
2.) Take a small drill bit and drill a hole in one side of the ball to give yourself a starting point. Use a large bit just slightly bigger than the light on the strand and drill a bigger hole in the exact same place. If you try to start with a big hole, the hole is not as clean.
3.) Place the ball around the light and use a small glob of silicone adhesive to hold it in place.
4.) Let dry and hang them somewhere pretty!
